1. In engineering maths - the equations that prove that when you exceed Mach 1, all the controls on an plane work in the opposite direction. I can provide a worked example if I search out my old textbooks but I'm lazy.

2. Will need to think on that one.

3. They are all fascinating in different ways but I would say Rome, because we have so much more information about how they thought. I'm interested in the ways in which they are similar to us but also very different.

4. Tragically, I've not been reading many books recently. Online - Kate Harding and Sweet Machine of Shapely Prose are awesome. Actual papery books - probably still Salman Rushdie for The Moor's Last Sigh.

5. I had decided to study Chem Eng at university. I was planning to study in Scotland until I talked to a very lonely-looking rep from UMIST at a university recruitment fair. When I came for my student visit, it was clear that Manchester was a big scary place for a girl from a relatively quiet area but I knew it was a challenge I had to take. Also, I liked the course and the city so it became my first choice UCAS place.
