not because we may, one day, see them again
- for heaven would be drab
if it were nothing but
one cosmic, endless dinner party -
but because we are all we have
and oblivion is describable
as a blank page, forever.
But death is a tense past
a short and unentangled future
and no present at all.
A country yet to be discovered
demands nothing from us
except a stout pair of shoes
and a sense of breathful expectation
for the road ahead.
