Ok, I've got this recipe, and I'd like to know what people think.

INGREDIENTS (SERVES ONE)

1 plain black tee-shirt (extra-large for preference)
1 bottle of domestic bleach
1 roll of industrial masking tape

Cover up most of the front of the tee-shirt with the masking tape, leaving only an area spelling out a short but inoffensive word - "RAGE" or "TRASH" or something similar.

Making sure that the back of the tee-shirt is appropriately protected, pour bleach to excess over the front of the tee-shirt. Wait a sensible length of time.

Remove the masking tape to reveal the word you've bleached into the tee-shirt. Wash tee-shirt to remove last traces of bleach. Wear to social events.

Would this work?

Oh I used to do this when I was in college

Well it wont go white, it'll got a beige colour, which is fine as long as you know.

It's much easier if your do all the above and then paint the bleach onto the stencil, if you just pour it on then there is much more chance of mistakes that you can't fix. And if you want you should water down the bleach and go over it a couple of times instead of once with full strength bleach.

Now I want to do that too!

I've heard of people doing similar, but they tend to create a stencil in card, then use a spray bottle of bleach to just lightly cover the exposed bits before waiting and washing.

Sounds pretty funky :-)

Alternatively, write the word with the bleach?

If you put lots of bleach on, it'll seep through under the masking tape. You're best off putting diluted bleach in a spray bottle and doing it slowly.

The general idea ought to work, though.

Hmm... not sure about this; I'd prefer to go to Squat Orange, buy one of their (very cheap) t-shirts and select the letters I wanted for them to put on for me.

They did my "Hugslut" t-shirt a few years back. You could probably find them on Google but I imagine there's one in Manchester somewhere :)

Not with masking tape, which is porous. Duct tape may be better

I use bleach for anti-tie-dye and it works fine - if you want letters you'd need to put something between the layers to stop it soaking through and I'd agree with the paint it on rather than soak it tip too.

I used to do this when I was a little teenage Manics fan, and it worked fine, except that as someone else suggested, I painted the bleach on with a paintbrush, or just wrote the word in bleach. (Alternatively, do the stencil thing on a white tshirt, and then spray-paint over it.)
